List of Environmental Exposures

I was surprised that the majority of unwanted exposures were found at home! I used to consider home as one of the safest places among others and found it threatening that there are so many risks in our homes. We also spend a lot of time in our homes, which increases the number of dangerous exposures such as chemical, biological and radiological. The fact that modern trends show that people tend to spend more time at home and the amount of time spend outdoors has dramatically decreased over the last years magnifies my concerns.
Personally, I hadn't thought about my safety and dangerous environmental exposures at home before the last in-person class. Even though I do use carbon water filters, try to buy local organic products and overall do not overuse toxins, after assessing my home for environmental exposures I yet found it not entirely safe. Sadly, I don't think that I can somehow change it since I have a sublease and not even sure how long I am going to stay at the apartment

After assessing my home for potential unwanted and dangerous environmental exposures well as evaluating it for safety, I arrived at a conclusion that my environment is moderately safe. First of all, the home was built in 2006, which allows concluding that there is no lead exposure. Additionally, my landlord stated that the house was tested for radon and no threats of radon exposure had been found.  Carbon monoxide exposure may be a potential threat to our building since we have a gas oven and gas central heating system. However, it is in excellent condition, and we do not use the central heater or any other heaters often because it remains warm during most of the times in a year.
Moreover, I keep my window open 24/7 and prefer to sleep with an open window as well. When me or my roommate cook we always use vents and open windows. The fire alarm system and fire detectors also work well.
However, we live on the first floor, which causes ants and spiders problem in the apartment. None of us ever used any insecticide sprays, but an inspector comes once a month and puts insecticide gel if needed. I personally refused this service in the past two months because I haven't seen any insects.
Otherwise, there is no basement in our apartment and no garage in the building.
I checked the water supply of the area and found out that water comes primarily from the Hetch Hetchy Water System, which originates in Yosemite. Tap water in San Francisco is considered safe for use and controlled by the State Water Resources Control Board. The latest controls were in 2009, 2012 and 2015 as I could find.
